Phoenix Boosts Community Services Funding $12 Million for 12 Neighborhoods

Changes for Phoenix Households
Residents in the affected zip codes can apply for extended after-school slots at 14 city recreation centers beginning in September. The budget also adds 220 new job-training placements at the South Mountain and Desert West facilities each quarter. Families previously on waiting lists for these programs will receive priority notification by mail in August.
Local food distribution sites will receive $2.1 million of the new funds to extend operating hours on weekends. The policy document lists specific sites such as the Garfield and Sunnyslope centers that will add Saturday service. Transportation vouchers for program participants will cover routes on the Valley Metro light rail and local bus lines.
Budget Figures and Next Steps
The $12 million figure appears in the adopted budget ordinance passed by the council on July 6. It represents 3.8 percent of the total Community Services Department allocation for the coming fiscal year. The city projects that 6,800 additional residents will use the expanded services by the end of 2027.
Implementation begins with a 30-day public comment period on program rules starting July 10. The Community Services Department will publish updated eligibility guidelines on the city website by August 15. Quarterly progress reports on enrollment and spending will be presented to the City Council beginning in January 2027.
